What is Thyroid

Thyroid is one of the largest endocrine gland. It is the butterfly Shaped gland found in Neck.Hormonal output from the thyroid is stimulated by Thyroid Stimulating hormone (TSH) produced by anterior pituitatory.

Thyroid problem Ranges from Small Goitre to Life threatening Thyroid Cancer.

What is Protein Energy Malnutrition?

Protein Energy Malnutrition is potentially a depletion disorder of the fatal body; it refers to the malnutrition where there is inadequate Energy & protein Intake.

Types of PEM:

1.Primary PEM

It occurs mainly due to the inadequate supply of Protein in the diet.

2.Secondary PEM

It is Common in US, It occurs as a complication of AIDS, Cancer, Chronic kidney failure, Inflammatory bowel disease & other illnesses which inhibits the absorption of other nutrients.


  • It usually affects younger children aged between 1 – 5 years.
  • But it is prevalent among all age groups.

  • It usually affects the children under one year age.
  • It occurs when the person is malnourished for long

periods of time say over a year.

5.Marasmic Kwashiorkor

  • As the name suggests this type of malnutrition lies between both kwashiorkor & marasmus.
