Solid advice on solid foods for Infants

Breast feeding routines or formula mixing is in process, while solid foods are just one more adventure in the journey of child feeding.

At 4 to six months ready to begin solid foods

Birth to 4 months (baby can suck, swallow and stick out tongue Breast feed
4 to 6 months Order of solid foods i) Iron fortified foods (singe strained fruits and vegetables or cereal grain cereal) – 4 to six months (idly, rice) – Iron forticifed cereal followed by (oat barly cereal), Mix 1 tsp of ceral with breast milk or formula and offere 2 to 3 times daily with spoon.
5 to 6 months
Baby can learn to eat from spoon. Lip closure is present
Iron fortified ceral – Add plain strained baby gegetables (peas, carrot, squash, green beans) and strained baby fruits (banana, apple sauces, peaches, pear and apricot) – 1 ot 2tbs of strained veg or fruit 2 to 3 times daily. Offer new food every 3 to 4 days and watch for signs of intolerance (rash, spotting up or diarrohea)
6 to 8 month (chewing motion is present) IFCereal – Increase to 4 tbsp or more daily. Add plain strained baby meats (chicken, lamb, egg yolk). Offer ½ to 1 tbsp one to two times daily. Increased strained veg to 2 tbs or more per day. Offer 2 to 4 ounces of fruit juices fortified with vit C in abottle or cop. Begin, unsweetened dry cereals, crackers, soft breads
8-9 month (teeth are present, chewing improves baby can grasp food with hand Breast milk. IF cereals, small serving of cheese, plain yougurt, soft cheese, chopped canned fruit,
10-12 months Continue iron fortified cerals (4tbs more day) add cooked cut up pieces of vegetables and soft fruits (4tbs or more per day) tender meats.

Although 4-6 months are ready to start solid foods, don’t rely on calendar. Babies must be phsiacll and developmentally ready for solid foods. Age just a point of ferenferenec.

Learning to eat the first solid food through spoon. Its a step towards independence and learning to eat on ones own (initiall challenges). Use a small sppon with long handle. While feeding, pick a time when your baby is relaized and hungry. Smile and talk as you feed, which will help food experience more pleaseant and talking helps language development.

  • Peanut butter spread on toasted whole grain bread or rolled inside a wheattortilla
  • Vegetable Pizza
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Whole wheat crackers – apple and cheese slices between
  • Breakfast cereals topped with fresh fruit, nuts, frozen yougut
